Men's Tennis Goes 2-1 on Day Four of Spring Trip

AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst men's tennis team went 2-1 on the day, defeating Concordia-Irvine (5-4) and Whittier (6-3), while dropping a match to the College of the Desert (6-3) to move to 14-1 on the year.

Concordia's Bruno Santerelli '12 and Gernot Hagemann '15 defeated Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, Conn.) and Joey Fritz '14 (Cincinnati, Ohio), 8-1, at first doubles, while Jon Cypers '15 (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Andrew Scheiner '15 (New York, N.Y.) bested Ryan McNamara '12 and Patrick Szeremeta '13, 8-5. Senior Sam Sperling (Chicago, Ill.) and Justin Hendrix '14 (Surrey, United Kingdom) rounded out doubles action with an 8-4 victory over Rafael Coutinho '13 and Jan Guler '13.

Santarelli turned down Fritz 6-1, 7-6 at first singles, while Kahan scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ashkon Babaee '14 in the second slot. Coutinho cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cypers, while Hendrix earned a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Hagemann.

Rallying from a 6-3 first set loss, Scheiner took two straight from Gular, 7-6, 6-0, while Micah Groom '13 rounded out the Concordia order with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sperling.

Amherst's Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Andrew Jung '12 (Battle Creek, Mich.) defeated Josh Banks '15 and Justin Seller '15, 8-3, at first doubles, while Eli Mlaver '14 (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Sean Rodriguez '15 (Corpus Christi, Texas) handed Fabio Paterno '15 and Arthur Castro '15 a 9-7 loss. Senne Braun '15 and Marcelo Rezende '15 staved off the Jeffs' bid at a doubles sweep, downing Dan Keolasy '13 (Fullerton, Calif.) and Sam Ubersax '15 (Pepper Pike, Ohio) 8-4 at third doubles.

Parker Kelley headlined singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Waterman, while Banks earned a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Mlaver. Brown bested Rodriguez 6-3, 6-3 at third singles, while Seller benefited from a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Keolasy.

Ubersax held his own at fifth singles, turning down Castro, 6-4, 6-1, while Brenton Arnaboldi '14 (New York, N.Y.) got the better of Rezende, 6-1, 6-3 at the bottom of the order.

Whittier's Julian Seneviratne '13 and Patricio Carregha '12 notched the Poets' first point of the afternoon with an 8-6 first doubles victory over Luis Rattenhuber '13 (Munich, Germany) and Chris Dale '14 (Austin, Texas), while Robby Sorrel '12 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Austin Chafetz '12 (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) bested Chris Schommer '14 and Andrew Hansen '14, 8-4. Julian Camacho '12 (New York, N.Y.) and Justin Reindel '14 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-5 triumph over Matthew Herron '15 and Shogo Shimizu '15.

Chafetz headlined the Jeffs' singles lineup, outlasting Seneviratne, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, while Carregha recorded a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 2-6, (11-9) win over Rattenhuber. Reindel defeated Schommer 7-6 (1), 6-2 at third singles, while Herron downed Camacho, 7-5, 7-6 (7).

Surain Asokaraj '12 (Acton, Mass.) secured a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Hansen at fifth singles, while Sorrel outdueled Shimizu, 6-3, 6-4 at the bottom of the order.
