Jeffs Open Fall Slate @ Colgate

HAMILTON, NY - The Amherst men's tennis team opened its fall slate with a trio of dual matches against St. Bonaventure, Binghamton and host Colgate University over the weekend, finishing 2-1 with a pair of impressive wins. 

Amherst fell 6-1 to Colgate in its Saturday opener despite a three-set singles victory by junior David Wellner (West Hartford, CT) over John Redar in number-six singles. In other Amherst matches, junior Bryan Wexler (West Newbury, MA) fell to Evan Paushter, sophomore Brian Chin (Dobbs Ferry, NY) lost to Owen Fileti, senior Reeve Segal (Newton, MA) fell to Josh Cohn, sophomore Adam Leibsohn (Mission Hills, KS) lost to Eric Specullo and sophomore Andy Tsai (Tampa, FL) fell to Andrew Davis. 

The Jeffs rebounded with a 6-1 win over Division I St. Bonaventure later that afternoon. In singles action Wexler topped Markus Arvaja 7-5, 7-2, Chin edged Mark Gorski 6-4, 6-4, Leibsohn ousted Drew Crawford 6-2, 6-4, Tsai routed Ryan Magee 6-4, 6-1 and sophomore Rob Feeley (Chappaqua, NY) bettered Dan Walsh 6-2, 6-0. 

Sunday brought similar results as Amherst edged Binghamton 4-3 on the strength of Chin's thrilling number-two singles victory over Brad Davidoff, 7-5, 4-6, 11-9. Other Amherst singles wins included Segal over Steve Spencer 6-1, 6-2, Leibsohn over Randall Shu 6-3, 7-6, Tsai over Brian Hoffner 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and Wellner over Brad Sherwood 7-5, 7-5. 

Amherst returns to the courts at the ECAC Tournament at Vassar College this Friday and Saturday.
