AMHERST, Mass. – Scott Romeyn '22 headlined the 2019 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Men's Swimming & Diving Championship receiving NESCAC Rookie of the Year as 11 members of the Amherst men's swimming & diving team received all-conference recognition, as announced by the league office after their performances last weekend at the Middlebury Natatorium on the campus of Middlebury College.
The top-three finishers in each event received All-Conference recognition, highlighted by three Mammoth event victories.
Romeyn finished the championship with two individual second place finishes coming from the 50-yard freestyle (20.26) and the 100-yard freestyle (44.34). He also was a part of four teams that finished inside the top-three, including the record breaking team in the 400-yad freestyle relay (3:00.29) that capped off the Mammoths appearance in the championship. Romeyn was also an integral part of the 400 and 200-yard medley relay teams that finished with times of 3:16.96 and 1:29.86, respectively.
Returning to the All-Conference ballot for the third consecutive season, Jack Koravos '20, Craig Smith '20, and Sean Mebust '20 made their mark in this year's championship. Mebust lead the way with two impressive first place finishes coming in the 50 (25.54) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.17). Mebust also took second place in the 100-yard breaststroke while placing top-three in two relay events.
Koravos was the second and final Mammoth to nab first in the tournament when he set a pool record in the 50-yard butterfly on day one (22.19). He also claimed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.30 while also placing top-three in four separate relay events. Smith rounds out the three-peat with second place in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke while also swimming in the 400-yard medley relay in which Amherst finished second with a time of 3:16.96.
Bennett Fagan '21 claims his second career all-conference accolade after placing top-three in both diving events. On the 1-meter board, Fagan came up just shy of first when he notched a score of 464.30 to nestle in second. Fagan concluded his NESCAC Championship appearance after taking third place on the 3-meter board with a score of 465.70. First-year Tom Amsbry '22 is the final diver to accrue a conference nod when he finished second in the 3-meter event with a score of 477.40.
Charles Seltzer, now a four-time All-NESCAC returner, received three conference nods over the weekend. Seltzer finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.41) while swimming a leg in the second place team of the 800-yard freestyle relay. Seltzer concluded his swimming at the NESCAC Championship contributing to the record breaking 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Senior Chris Quinones concludes the individual accolades for the Mammoths with third place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke.
Kou Li'21, Eric Wong '20, and Tristan So '21 cap off the NESCAC recognition for the Amherst men's swimming and diving team as they contributed to a second place score of 6:41.63 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
With eight individual awards, and five relay finishes inside the top-three, the Mammoths were able to secure third place in this year's conference championship with a score of 1,506.
