Season Preview: Men’s Swim & Dive Primed for Another Conference Title Run

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's swimming & diving team are set to begin their 2018-19 campaign as they return nine all-conference selections to the roster who contributed to a 7-1 record in dual-meet action, prior to placing third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships last season.

The Mammoths will open their season as they host Colby College on Saturday, November 17th beginning at 2:00 PM.

MEET THE SENIORS

Chris Quinones '19 (Breast, Free) and Josh Chen '19 (Breast, Free) both received All-NESCAC honors last season in the individual performances. Charles Seltzer '19 (Back, Free) also received a conference bid as a part of the 400 and 800-yard medley relay.

Bobby Shogren '19 (Diving) and Justin Lee '19 (Breast) round out the Class of 2019 as they amassed solid performances during their junior season. Lee recorded a second place finish in the opening meet, marking a time of 28.51 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Shogren accumulated a score of 165.23, placing third in the three meter diving at the Middlebury dual-meet at the beginning of the year. He also followed up that performance with second place in the one meter diving at the Williams College meet with a score of 189.30.

UNDERCLASSMAN

Craig Smith '20, Jack Koravos '20, and Sean Mebust '20 aim to lead the junior class this season after receiving All-NESCAC selection in 2017-18. Smith received second place with a time of 1:48.34 in the 200 yard backstroke while Koravos finished second as well with a time of 48.77 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. Mebust repeated as the 200 yard breaststroke champion with a 2:00.60 mark while also adding a third place finish in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 25.73 seconds.

Noah Aube '20 (Free) Brandon Wang '20 (Back, I.M.) Eric Wong '20 (Free, Fly) and Jack Fergus '20 (Back) add depth to the junior class. Wang clinched first in the 200 yard IM with a 1:59.01 mark at Connecticut College while Fergus narrowly earned the win behind a 54.34 second mark when the team traveled to take on Union College in late December last season.

The Mammoths return six sophomores to this year's roster. Adi Arifovic '21 (I.M.), Ang Li '21 (Backstroke, Free), Bobby Meyer '21 (Free), Matt Sanders '21 (Sprint, Fly), Tristan So '21 (Sprint, Fly), and Flanagan Waldherr '21 (Distance) are all primed for another conference title run.

Eight first-year athletes will round out the team this year, with Peter Baird '22 (Fly, IM), Jack Dengler '22 (Back), Austin Lee '22 (Distance, Fly), Sam Leonard '22 (Sprint, Back), Scott Romeyn '22 (Sprint), Malcolm Scannell '22 (IM, Breast, Free), Gary Sun '22 (Breast, IM, Fly) who will all be vying to make a positive impact early for the Mammoths.

DIVING

Joining Shogren as a diving veteran is Bennett Fagan '20, who totaled 457.95 points on the 3-meter board to finish second overall in the NCAA Championships. First-year Tom Amsbry '22 will be set up for success as he aims to bring value to the diving corp.
