Sholtis Leads Jeffs in Day One Action at NESCAC's

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Connor Sholtis of the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team set a program record with a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle Friday during day one action at the 2015 Men's NESCAC Championship, hosted by Middlebury College.

After 101 events, the Jeffs rank second overall behind Williams with 577 points. The Ephs hold the top spot with 709, while Connecticut College sits in third with 534.5. Rounding out the top-five were Bates (409) and Tufts (360.5), respectively.

Sholtis highlighted the day for Amherst as he touched the wall in a program record and NCAA 'B' cut time of 20.63. The senior was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that took second overall in the event with a NCAA 'B' cut mark of 3:19.43. The team consisted of Michael Rochford '15, Elijah Spiro '18, Sam Spurrell '18 and Sholtis.

In total, Amherst recorded seven NCAA 'B' cut times. They grabbed two in both the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. In the 500 free, Connor Haley '17 and Ben Grimes '15 finished in NCAA 'B' cut marks of 4:34.41 and 4:35.02, respectively, to take third and fourth overall, while John Brody '17 finished eighth in 4:37.24. In the 200 IM, Jeff Anderson '17 and Greg Han '17 registered NCAA 'B' cut times, as Anderson took second with a program record mark of 1:51.50 and Han claimed fifth in 1:52.88. Asher Lichtig '16 also set a NCAA 'B' cut mark in diving events and finished third in the 1-meter with 472.10 points.

The Jeffs excelled in the 50-yard butterfly and took third through fifth place. Tyler Hampton '15 paced the squad with a time of 22.67, followed by Reed Patterson '17 in 22.73 and Spurrell in 22.90.

Rounding out the top performances on the day were Elijah Spiro '18 in 50-yard breaststroke, Rochford in the 50-yard backstroke, Hampton in the 50 free, and the 200-yard freestyle relay team. Spiro claimed third in the 50 breast with a time of 25.69, Rochford took fifth in the 50 back with a mark of 23.48 and Hampton took sixth in the 50 free with a time of 21.01. The 200 free relay squad of Alex Dreisbach '17, Anderson, Keegan Simmons '17 and Hampton placed fourth overall by touching the wall in 1:24.27.

The Jeffs return to the Middlebury College Natatorium tomorrow at 10 a.m. for second round action.
