Jeffs Excel in Day Two Action at NESCAC Championships

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – A day after winning the 50-yard freestyle, Connor Sholtis '15 earned another win for the Amherst College men's swimming and diving team and claimed the 200 free title at the 2015 NESCAC Championships Saturday at the Middlebury College Natatorium.

The Jeffs remain in second place through 17 events with 1080 points, while Williams sits atop the rankings with 1461.5. Rounding out the top-five is Conn. College (1019) in third, Bates (752) in fourth and Tufts (745) in fifth.

Sholtis had another phenomenal meet in day two action as he claimed the 200 free in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:40.51. He was also a member of two second-place relay teams that swam in NCAA 'B' cut marks; the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The 200 medley squad of Matt Heise '16, Elijah Spiro '18, Tyler Hampton '15 and Sholtis finished second in an Amherst program record time of 1:30.94, while the 800 free team of Jeff Anderson '16, Ben Grimes '15, Alex Dreisbach '17 and Sholtis took second in 6:49.19.

In total, the Jeffs recorded eight NCAA 'B' cut times, and grabbed three of those eight in the 400-yard individual medley. Pacing the Jeffs in the event was Anderson with a second-place finish. He touched the wall in 3:58.48, ahead of Grimes and Greg Han '17 who took fifth and sixth, respectively. Grimes finished in 3:59.73 and Han swam in 4:02.68.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Sam Spurrell '18 finished sixth overall in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 49.88, ahead of teammate Reed Patterson '17 who claimed seventh in 50.02. Spiro also earned a NCAA 'B' cut time with a mark of 56.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He finished fourth overall in the event.

Rounding out the top performances on the day were Connor Haley '17 in the 1000-yard freestyle, and Dreisbach and Keegan Simmons '17 in the 200 free. Haley took second overall in the event with a time of 9:29.38, while Dreisbach finished seventh (1:43.00) and Simmons (1:44.08) took eighth in the 200 free.

The Jeffs return to the pool tomorrow for the final day of action at the 2015 NESCAC Championships. The prelims begin at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 5:15 p.m.
