CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team dropped its dual meet at MIT Saturday afternoon by a score of 197.5-127.5. With the loss, the Jeffs are now 4-2 overall this year while the Engineers improved to 6-1.
In the second men's event of the day, Connor Haley '17 claimed the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:48.90. The sophomore edged teammate Ben Grimes '15, who placed second in 9:55.50. Haley also tied for first in the 500 free. The sophomore touched the wall at the same time as Alexander Lednev of MIT as they finished in 4:44.69. Placing third with a time of 4:48.26 was Grimes, while John Janezich '18 took fourth with a mark of 4:49.22.
The Jeffs took home another first-place finish in the next event as Sam Spurrell '18 paced the field in the 200 yard butterfly with a mark of 1:54.07. The first-year also finished second in the 100 fly as he touched the wall in 51.63.
Amherst also grabbed two wins from Greg Han '17 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. He claimed the 100 with a time of 58:05, while Elijah Spiro '18 took third in 59.09, and claimed the 200 breast with a mark of 2:07.18. Nick Lafky '17 finished third in the event in 2:09.97.
In other events, Han finished second in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 1:55.78, while Michael Rochford '15 finished third in 1:58.78. Rochford also took third in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.62.
Other top performances on the day came from Tyler Hampton '15 and Connor Sholtis '15 in the 50, 100 and 200 free. Hampton finished third in the 50 free with a time of 21.65 seconds, and Sholtis took third in both the 100 (46.42) and 200 (1:46.55).
Asher Lichtig '16 won both diving events as he took the 1 meter with 237.45 points and the 3 meter with 260.56 points.
In relay events, the Jeffs took home second and third in the 400 medley. The 'A' team consisting of Matt Heise '16, Spiro, Jeff Anderson '16 and Soltis finished in 3:30.85 taking second, while the 'B' team of Rochford , Han, Spurrell, and Vic Sun '16 placed third in 3:32.52. In the 200 medley, the 'A' squad took second as Heise, Spiro, Hampton and Alex Dreisbach '17 swam in 1:34.92. Also, the men's 'A' 400 free relay of Hampton, Dreisbach, Sun and Sholtis took third in their respective event as they finished in 3:11.33.
Amherst returns to the pool tomorrow, Feb. 1 and will head to Springfield for a 1 p.m. meet.
