Jeffs Cruise Past Union in Season-Opener, 202-91

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's swimming & diving team cruised to a 202-91 dual-meet win Saturday afternoon against Union College in the Jeffs' 2014-15 season-opener in Pratt Pool.

Amherst won a total of 14 events as it opens the campaign with a 1-0 mark, handing the Dutchmen their first loss of the year (1-1).

In the first men's event of the day, the Jeffs' 200 medley relay 'A' team consisting of Sam Spurrell '18, Greg Han '17, Matt Heise '16 and Tyler Hampton '15 finished first with a mark of 1:36.84. The Jeffs also claimed the final event of the afternoon, in another relay event, as Amherst's 'A' squad of Spurrell, Hampton, Alex Dreisbach '17 and Connor Sholtis '15 won the 200 free relay in 1:27.39.
 
Ben Grimes '15 won the lone distance race of the day, claiming the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:06.13. He also finished first in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:00.28.

Sholtis, in addition to his 200 MR win, picked up two individual first-place finishes. The senior took the 100 free in 46.96 and the 200 free in 1:46.78. Han, Heise and Spurrell also added individual titles, taking the 200 back (1:56.92), 200 breaststroke (2:10.87) and the 100 fly (51.90), respectively. In other butterfly events, Jeff Anderson '16 won the 200 fly in 1:54.87.

Asher Lichtig '16 swept the diving events. He won the 3-meter dive with 265.24 points and the 1-meter dive with a NCAA "B" cut mark of 280.95.

In their first collegiate meets, Elijah Spiro '18 and John Janezich '18 picked up two victories. Spiro won the 100 breaststroke in 59.12 and Janezich claimed the 500 free in 4:53.31.

The Jeffs return to the pool Saturday, Nov. 22 and will host NESCAC rival Colby at 2 p.m.
