SHENANDOAH, Texas – Asher Lichtig '16, Connor Sholtis '15, and Sam Stewart '16 each notched top-five finishes on Day Two of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships as the Amherst College men's team climbed to sixth in the team standings. The Jeff women also ended the day in sixth as Emily Hyde '16, Sarah Conklin '16, and a pair of relays each placed in the top 10.
Entering the day in 17th place, the men's team made its dramatic rise over the second half of the evening session, starting with Stewart's fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Crossing the line in 48.51, the rookie nabbed 14 points, while Tyler Bulakul '14 also scored in the event, chipping in three points as he placed 14th in 49.21.
Sholtis was even more impressive in the next men's final, grabbing 15 points as he placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.28). Immediately after, Lichtig matched him as the first-year diver turned in a huge effort on the one-meter board, placing fourth with a 485.15. Mark Idleman '15 added a pair of points as well, placing 15th at 422.30.
With the Jeffs in seventh after the diving heroics, the men's 400-yard Medley Relay squad capped the surge as Conor Deveney '15 (backstroke), Tom Zhang '16 (breaststroke), Stewart (fly) and Sholtis (free) placed seventh in 3:20.14, vaulting Amherst up to sixth with 91 team points after the day's final event as the Jeffs currently sit first among NESCAC programs and three points ahead of Stevens (88). The top five have separated themselves, however, with Amherst well shy of fifth-place Emory (160).
The men also picked up points earlier in the evening, beginning with the 14th-place finish (1:22.86) of the 200-yard Free Relay comprised of Stewart, Sholtis, Deveney and Tyler Hampton '15. Jeff Anderson '16 chipped in a pair of points in the 400-yard Individual Medley, placing 15th in 4:03.50 as the team scored in every final of the night.
Meanwhile, the Amherst women dipped slightly in the standings, falling from fifth to sixth despite numerous strong performances. With 142 team points, the Jeffs stand right behind Johns Hopkins (148) in the battle for the fifth spot heading into Day Three.
After turning heads with a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM on Wednesday, Hyde was nearly as strong in the 400-meter edition, earning 13 points as she placed sixth in 4:25.18. Continuing the first-year heroics, Conklin followed up Hyde's effort with a 12-point, seventh-place finish in the 100 Fly finals as she crossed in 55.68.
Amherst's relays also provided big points as the 400 Medley squad of Emily Swett '13 (back), Hyde (breast), Conklin (fly) and Katie Vincett '13 (free) took sixth in 3:46.63, earning 26 points. In the day's first final, the 200 Free Relay chipped in 18 points by winning the consolation final as Vincett, Conklin, Ashleigh Stoddart '15 and Lulu Belak '14 placed ninth overall in 1:35.26.
Steph Ternullo '15 (1:50.83) and Stoddart (1:52.55) rounded out the women's scoring on the day as they placed 12th and 15th, respectively, in the 200 Free.
Action continues on Friday with the 200 Fly, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 800 Free, and women's one-meter diving each to be completed. Preliminary heats begin at 11 a.m. Eastern with finals set to start at 7 p.m.
