Men's Swimming in Second Place After Day Two

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Despite individual wins by Sam Stewart '16 and Tom Zhang '16 in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke, the Amherst men's swimming and diving team relinquished its day one lead, falling behind archrival Williams after the second day of competition at the 2013 NESCAC Championships.

Posting wins in five of the night's eight events, the Ephs surged to the top of the leader-board with 1357 points, while the Jeffs sit in second with 1290.5 points. Conn. College (810.5), Tufts (737) and Middlebury (721.5) rounded out the top five, with Bowdoin (547.5), Bates (533.5) and Hamilton (382) in sixth through eighth. Wesleyan (372.5) currently ranks sixth, while Colby (372) and Trinity (263) closed out the field of 11. 

Continuing to impress after a solid opening day which saw him set a school record in the 50 fly, Stewart notched his first individual victory at the championships, with a program and meet record time of 48.09 in the 100 butterfly. Teammate Tyler Bulakul '14 also turned in a solid performance, coming in fourth with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 48.90, while Tyler Hampton '15 placed seventh (50.64).

Stewart joined Hampton, Matt Heise '16 and Tom Zhang '16 on the Jeffs' third-place 200 MR (1:31.86), which fell two one hundredths of a second shy of matching a program mark. Zhang led all swimmers with a pool record time of 56.85 in the 100 breast, with Amherst's Alex Kang '15 also factoring into the scoring in sixth (58.07).

Three Jeffs placed in the top five of the 200 free, with Connor Sholtis '15, Nick Egan '14 and Parker Moody '14 posting 'B' cut times of 1:39.93, 1:40.87 and 1:41.67, respectively. Conor Deveney '15 was the runner-up in the 100 back (50.22), with Heise and Bulakul placing third (50.44) and seventh (50.94). Conor McAuliffe '14 was the lone Jeff in the top eight of the 1000 free, touching in at 9:29.73. 

Jeff Anderson '16 and Michael Rochford '15 finished second (3:59.34) and fifth (4:01.79) in the 400 IM, while Anderson also joined Moody, Egan and Sholtis on Amherst's second-place 800 FR that recorded an NCAA 'B' cut time of 6:47.38.
