Lord Jeffs Wrap up Dual Meet Season at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up a win at Springfield College to wrap up the 2008-09 dual meet season. The Lord Jeffs will return to action for the 2009 NESCAC Championships, which begin Friday, Feb. 27, at Wesleyan University for the men and Friday, Feb. 20, at Bowdoin College for the women.

On the men's side (173-125), Amherst finished one-two-three in the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, with first-year Tim White (Centerport, NY) picking up the win in each event. White also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.90, which was nearly five seconds faster than sophomore Ryan Colby (Birdsboro, PA), who placed second.

Fresh off his NESCAC Performer of the Week performance last weekend against MIT, first-year Ryan Lichtenfels (McLean, VA) added another two wins to his impressive résumé. After edging out a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.89, Lichtenfels swam the 400-yard individual medley in 4:12.75.

Also picking up wins were sophomore Reid Fitzgerald (New York, NY), sophomore Alex Fraser (Willowbrook, IL) and junior Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA), who placed first in the 100 backstroke (54.65), 100 freestyle (47.38) and 100 butterfly (53.63), respectively.

Rounding out the Amherst victories was the 200-yard medley relay team of Fitzgerald, Homchick, first-year Ben McBratney (Evanston, IL) and senior Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL), which put in a time of 1:39.75.

For the first time as a Lord Jeff, defending national champion Kai Robinson (Vashon, WA) was swept in the diving events at a dual meet. The senior standout entered Saturday's meet having won both boards at all seven dual meets this season, but Springfield's Brian Sobel edged Robinson by 7.88 points on the 3-meter board and by 14.48 points in the 1-meter event.

On the women's side (172-126), Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM) convincingly won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.37 before tying teammate Erin Morrison (Kenilworth, IL) in the 100 freestyle, as each senior touched the wall in 53.63 seconds. Prior to the 100, Morrison placed second in the 50 freestyle at 25.61, right behind senior Mary Marvel (Williamsburg, MA), who put in the top time of 25.36.

Sophomore Kendra Stern (Albuquerque, NM), junior Anna Haring (Santa Barbara, CA) and senior Alex Lee (Piedmont, CA) picked up wins in the 200 freestyle (1:53.96), 200 butterfly (2:13.25) and 200 backstroke (2:11.64), respectively, while first-year Becca Thompson (Evanston, IL) won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.97.

The Lord Jeff women swept the top three times in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly and 200 IM. After senior tri-captain Kara MacLaverty (Kenilworth, IL) won the 400 IM (4:39.28) by more than six seconds, junior Kendal Dacey (West Roxbury, MA) edged Marvel in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.84. Senior Margaret Tato (Chatham, NJ) took home Amherst's final victory of the day with a mark of 2:17.61 in the 200 IM.

Senior Sabrina Dorman (Chevy Chase, MD) performed well in her final dual meet but came up just short in both diving events, coming up just two points shy of the top score on each board. After Springfield's Meghan Kijanka won the 1-meter dive with a score of 229.05—just ahead of Dorman's 227.31—the Pride completed the sweep by edging Dorman on the 3-meter board, 236.70 to 234.60.
