HADLEY, Mass. – The Amherst men's squash team collected two conference nods as Sophomore Terrence Wang '21 was selected First Team All-NESCAC and Harith Khawaja received Second Team All-NESCAC, as announced by the league office Friday afternoon.
Wang earns his second All-NESCAC honor, moving up to the First Team after receiving Second Team accolades last season. He has registered nine wins as the No. 1 player for the Mammoths. Last year, Wang fell in his opener at the CSA Team Championship but proceeded to win the next three matches to claim the consolation bracket championship. The native of Bellevue, Washington concluded his rookie campaign with an overall record of 6-6 at number one, nabbing a key victory against Colby College last season to help the Mammoths win 5-4.
Out of the nine matches won so far this season, Wang swept the first three sets in six of those matches. He posted strong five-set finishes against Tufts University (11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-8) and Wesleyan University (5-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8).
Khawaja was tabbed as a College Squash Association (CSA) Scholar Athlete last season and secures his second all-conference accolade after receiving Second Team All-NESCAC during his sophomore campaign in 2017. Khawaja matches Wang with nine wins overall coming from the second and fourth spots. Out of his nine victories, he has swept the first three sets in five of those matches.
In a loss to Bates College, Khawaja went the full length with his opponent Mahmoud Yousry but prevailed for an impressive finish of 11-9, 14-12, 7-11, 5-11, 12-10. He also claimed a five set victory two matches later when the Mammoths took on Bowdoin in a consolation match at the CSA Team Championships. After falling early (2-11), Khawaja answered to claim the second and third set before finalizing his strong performance with an 11-4 triumph in the fifth (2-11, 11-2, 11-3, 10-12, 11-4).
