AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 25 Amherst men's squash team made their season debut at Davenport Squash Courts as they split both matches, falling to Western Ontario 9-0 and defeating Northeastern 9-0 on Saturday.
The Mammoths faced Western Ontario first at 10:00 AM, where they found themselves swarmed by the No. 11 seeded Mustangs. Western Ontario went on to sweep the first three sets in eight out of the nine matches, limiting Amherst to only one set win on the morning.
Robert Parker '21 was the lone Mammoth to steal a point against the Mustangs, winning 14-12 in the second set. Parker battled in the first as well, forcing it to go to extra points, but ultimately fell by a 14-12 fate (14-12, 12-14,11-8, 11-3).
David Merkel '19 battled hard against Mustang Brett Schille, but was thwarted in each set by a narrow margin (12-10, 11-9, 11-8).
Matthew Henderson secured the #1 spot against Terrence Wang '21 with a decisive 11-6, 11-6, 11-2 victory. Liam Marrison followed up Henderson's performance in the #2 spot, recording an 11-8, 11-9, 12-10 win over first-year Robinson Armour '22.
Western Ontario will return to action on Sunday (Dec. 3) when they begin their three-game road trip in New York, battling Hamilton College at 3:00 PM.
In the second match of the day, the Mammoths swept Northeastern in the first three sets in each match, defeating the Huskies 9-0. Amherst moves to 1-1 on the season, while Northeastern falls to 2-3.
Terrence Wang '21 faced off against Karan Kishorepuria, winning by a 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 margin. John Grissom '22 and Shayan Hussain '22 finished off the day, posting wins in the ninth and tenth spot by a score of 11-8, 11-3, 11-2 and 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 respectively.
The Mammoths return to competition after the winter break when they're scheduled to take on Yale University on January 7th, beginning at 12:00 PM.
