No. 20 Men’s Squash Falls to No. 18 Bates, No. 24 Colby

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 20 Amherst College men's squash team completed Pioneer Valley Invitational action when it fell to No. 18 Bates College and No. 24 Colby College Sunday afternoon at the Davenport Squash Courts.

With the split, Amherst moves to 5-4 overall. The Purple & White fell, 8-1 to Bates, and swept Colby, 9-0.

Amherst's lone win against Bates came from the fifth position as Darian Ehsani '17 secured a four-set, 11-7, 4-11, 12-10, 11-9 win. Harith Khawaja '19 and David Merkel '19 each played out four-set defeats as Khawaja fell, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 11-5 on court two, while Merkel suffered a 11-3, 12-14, 11-9, 11-7 loss on court three.

Bates swept courts one, four, six, seven, eight, and nine, while the Purple & White's Ian Petty '19 was edged by Benni McComish, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7, 9-11, 15-13 in a five-set thriller on court 10 in exhibition.

Against Colby, Amherst's Merkel won, 13-15, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7 in comeback fashion on court three, while Cameron Bahadori '18 picked up an 11-5, 7-11, 11-5, 11-5 win on court four. On court eight, Mateen Mills '20 secured an 11-7, 12-14, 12-10, 11-7 win, while Mitch Ford '20 earned a 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9 triumph in a come-from-behind thriller. Petty added an exhibition victory on court 10, 11-5, 4-11, 11-4, 5-11, 11-3.

 

Colby earned sweeps on courts five and six, while Khawaja and Chris Zimmerman '20 were held off in four sets on courts two and seven respectively. On court one, Michael Groot '17 was edged, 12-10, 11-13, 11-6, 6-11, 11-3.
