Jeffs Down Wesleyan, 5-4, Fall to Williams, 8-1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 22nd-ranked Amherst College men's squash team earned a 5-4 victory over No. 20 Wesleyan before falling to No. 15 Williams, 8-1 during Sunday's Little Three Championship hosted by the Cardinals.

With the split, Amherst improves to 5-7 overall, Wesleyan moves to 9-6 overall, and Williams improves to 11-7 on the season.

The Jeffs edged Wesleyan in the first match of the day, 5-4. Noah Browne '16 was down 2-0 from the No. 1 spot before claiming three straight wins (11-7, 11-6, 11-9) to prevail and take the win, while Scott DeSantis '15 earned a 3-1 victory from the No. 2 position. Darian Ehsani '17 earned a sweep from the middle of the lineup on the No. 5 court, and Alex Southmayd '15 and Stephen Cacouris '16 grabbed 3-1 wins from the No. 8 and No. 9 courts, respectively.

Against Williams, Southmayd picked up the Purple & White's lone victory from the No. 8 spot, beating his opponent Varun Sharma, 3-2 (5-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7). From the No. 1 court, Browne took the oppening set against Robert Ruggiero, 11-9, but lost the next three frames. 

Max Kardon '15 battled to a 13-11 victory against the Ephs' John Shuck, but fell in the next three sets on the No. 6 court. Michael Groot '17 and Jeremy Van '17 each took their opponents to four sets on the No. 4 and No. 7 courts respectively, and each won the third stanza in their matches.

Amherst returns action on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 6-8 at the NESCAC championships.
