Jeffs Take Seventh With 6-3 Win Over Colby

CLINTON, N.Y. - The Amherst men's squash team put the brakes on a two game skid with a 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Colby during the final day of competition at the 2014 NESCAC Championships hosted by Hamilton College.

Defeating the Mules for the second time this season, the Jeffs improved to 6-10 on the year and locked up the seventh slot at the league tournament.

Dropping the first two sets of his first position match against CJ Smith '16, Noah Browne '16 staved off elimination with an 11-8 victory in the third. Carrying his momentum into the next frame, he notched an 11-4 decision before completing the comeback with an 11-6 triumph in the tiebreak. Trailing 2-1 against Patrick McCarthy '17, Scott DeSantis '15 took the final two sets of his second position match by scores of 11-5 and 11-7.

David Kerr '14 dispatched of Yuga Koda '16, 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-9), while Alex Southmayd '15 outlasted Hugh Doherty '17 in another five set match, 3-2 (11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 6-11, 11-6). After dropping the first set, Michael Groot '17 rallied for a 3-1 (7-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-9) win over Trey Simpson '14 at the sixth position, while William Hochman '14 got the best of first-year Darian Ehsani, 3-2 (8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-1, 11-9). 

At the seventh position, John Eder '15 earned a 3-2 (11-3, 11-5, 4-11, 10-12, 11-6) victory over Jeremy Van '17, while Rodrigo Miranda '14 upended Steve Carroll '14 in another five set affair. Trailing 2-1, Carroll took the fourth set 11-9, but Miranda rebounded in the fifth, finishing off his Mule counterpart, 11-3. Ben York '15 needed just three sets to defeat Thornton Ellis '16 in the ninth position, 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-9).

Amherst returns to action on Feb. 7-9 at the Division III Invitational hosted by Bowdoin.
