Jeffs Earn Split With Colby and Bates

AMHERST, Mass. - The 22nd-ranked Amherst men's squash team moved to 3-4 on the season after splitting a pair of matches on the second day of the 2013-14 Pioneer Valley Invitational.

Defeating No. 26 Colby in the morning session by a score of 8-1, the Jeffs fell to No. 12 Bates on Saturday afternoon, 9-0. The Purple & White wrap up Invitational play on Sunday, Jan. 19 with matches against No. 20 George Washington (9 a.m.) and No. 6 Franklin & Marshall (1 p.m.).

Getting Amherst off to a fast start against Colby, Noah Browne '16 dispatched of CJ Smith '16, 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-5), at the top of the lineup. Scott DeSantis '15 also recorded a three set win, besting Patrick McCarthy '17, 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-5). Dropping the first set of his third position match against Yuga Koda '16, 11-2, David Kerr '14 won the next three sets by scores of 11-9, 11-5, and 11-9.

Also down a set early to Trey Simpson '14, Alex Southmayd '15 rallied to win the next three, 11-7, 11-6, 12-10. Michael Groot '17 was on the verge of defeat after dropping the first two of his match against Will Hochman '14, but the rookie strung together three-straight, taking the win by virtue of his 11-8, 11-9 and 11-8 decisions in the final three frames.

Tied at a set apiece with John Eder '15, Max Kardon '15 took the final two thanks to a pair of 11-7 and 11-9 triumphs, while Steve Carroll '14 logged the Mules' only victory by defeating Jeremy Van '17, 3-2 (10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6). Darian Ehsani '17 handed Ben York '15 a 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5) loss, while Rodrigo Miranda '14 upended Greg Ho '16 in the ninth position, 3-1 (7-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-7).

Against Bates, Browne, DeSantis and Kerr dropped 3-0 decisions to Ahmed Abdel Khalek '16, Ahmed Sherif Hatata '17 and Kristian Muldoon '14 in the first through third positions, respectively. Trailing 1-0 in his fourth position match against Nabil Saleem '15, Southmayd won the second set, 12-10, but lost the following two frames by scores of 11-6 and 11-3.

The Bobcats' Darrius Campbell '17 and Caran Arora '16 swept Groot and Kardon in the fifth and sixth slots, while Van was the only other Jeff able to muster a set win against Bates, eventually falling to Nima Olumi '17, 3-1(11-7, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8). Carlos Ames '17 and Spencer Burt '17 held their own for Bobcats at the bottom of the order, turning away Ehsani and Miranda by scores of 3-0 (11-3, 11-3, 14-12) and 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-9), respectively.
