Jeffs Drop Two to Williams, Wesleyan

AMHERST, Mass. – The 21st-ranked Amherst men's squash team lost a pair of matches at the Little Three Championships, falling to No. 16 Wesleyan, 7-2, before dropping an 8-1 decision to No. 17 Williams.

Max Kardon '15 picked up one of two Jeff wins against the Cardinals, sweeping Raheem Logan '16, 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-9). Dropping his first set to Ethan Moritz '14, 11-7, Michael Groot '17 tied his sixth position showdown with an 11-9 victory in the second. Later down 2-1, Groot outlasted Moritz 18-16 in a closely contested fourth set before winning the tiebreak 11-7.Having now lost four straight matches, Amherst will look to turn things around at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Hamilton College on Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Alex Southmayd '15 was the only other Amherst player to force a fifth set, narrowly falling to Daniel Sneed '15 in the fourth position. Down 2-1, Southmayd won the fourth 11-9, but Sneed bounced back, taking the fifth and final frame, 11-7.

Noah Browne '16 accounted for Amherst's only win against Williams, defeating Taylor Foehl '14 at the top of the lineup. Dropping the first 11-7, Browne earned a 13-11 win in the second. Notching an 11-6 triumph in the third, Browne closed out the match with an 11-5 victory in the fourth set.

The Ephs' Kevin Chen '15, Chris Wilkonson '15, Robert Ruggiero '17 and Kai Graham '15 swept their Jeff counterparts in the second, third, fourth and sixth positions, while Varun Sharma '16 and Ryan Eagan '15 recorded 3-0 wins in the eighth and ninth. Andrew Maruca '14 upended Kardon, 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 11-3), while Galen Squiers '16 bested Darian Ehsani '17, 3-2 (9-11, 11-0, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7).
