Jeffs Blank Stanford, Fall to Columbia

AMHERST, Mass. – The 22nd-ranked Amherst men's squad team swept No. 25 Stanford but dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 11 Columbia later in the day on Friday at the Pioneer Valley Invitational, hosted by Mount Holyoke, Smith and Amherst.

The Jeffs (2-2) won their second game of the season with a decisive 9-0 win over Stanford in the first match of the day.

Scott DeSantis '15 played in the No. 1 position for the first time this season and defeated Parker Odrich '17, 3-0. After consecutive 11-9 wins in the first and second frame, the junior edged out a 14-12 win in the final game. David Kerr '14, Michael Groot '17, Max Kardon '15, Jeremy Van '17, Rodrigo Miranda '14 and Jacob Pfau '17 also all swept their opponents on courts No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. 

Alex Southmayd '15 played to a competitive 3-2 win from the No. 3 position. After claiming the first game, 11-9, the junior dropped two straight and found himself facing defeat. However, he retaliated and won the fourth frame, 11-6, followed by an 11-7 win in the final game for the come-from-behind victory. On the No. 7 court, Darian Ehsani '17 dropped the first game to Vihan Khanna '16 but rattle off three straight wins (11, 3, 11-5, 11-5) for the 3-1 win.

Amherst (2-3) dropped its second match of the day as Columbia improved to 4-2 on the season. 

Darian Ehsani '17 claimed the Jeffs only win as he defeated Peter Giraudo '17, 3-0 by scores of 11-6, 5-11, 11-4 and 11-8 from the No. 8 position.

The Jeffs return to the court tomorrow for day two of the Pioneer Valley Invitational and will face Colby at 11 a.m. followed by Bates at 5 p.m.
