Jeffs Drop Season Opener to Drexel, 6-3

Browne

AMHERST, Mass. - First-year Noah Browne picked up a win at the top of the lineup, but the Amherst men's squash team opened its 2012-13 season with a 6-3 loss to Drexel University.

Putting forth an impressive effort in his collegiate debut, Browne secured a 3-1 (11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 11-5) decision over the Dragons' Ibrahim Bakir '16. Justin Singh '14 defeated Alex Southmayd '15, 3-0, in the second position, while Binura Jayasunya '16 outlasted Scott DeSantis '14 in a back-and-fourth five frame affair. Needing a win to stay alive, DeSantis edged out a 13-11 triumph in the fourth, but it was Jayasunya that prevailed in the tiebreaker with an 11-6 victory.

Mike Dolente '16 handled Max Kardon '15, 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-9), while Mark Kauf '16 swept David Kerr '14, 3-0 (11-4, 12-10, 11-8). Joey Gingold '16 shut out Kelvin Chen '16, 3-0, in a sixth position showdown, while Amherst took two of the three pairings in the bottom three slots.

Up 2-0, Jake Albert '15 suffered an 11-5 setback to Nick DiDonato '15, but rebounded with an 11-6 close out win in the fourth. Also flirting with a straight set win, Steve Cacouris '16 notched an 11-5 victory over Harshil Dokania '15 to record the Jeffs' only other triumph.
