Jeffs Top Camels in First Round, 7-2

Amherst2

HARTFORD, Conn. – The seventh-seeded Amherst College men's squash team won the top seven spots on the scorecard, taking down 10th-seeded Connecticut College, 7-2, in the first round of the NESCAC Championship hosted by Trinity on Friday evening.

The Lord Jeffs advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal round where they will meet second-seeded Williams College at 1:30 p.m., the rivals meeting again just a week after the Ephs handed Amherst an 8-1 defeat at the Little Three Championship in Williamstown.

Friday's match was not as tight as the previous Jeff-Camel affair of 2013 – a 5-4 Amherst win on Jan. 13 – as only one of Amherst's top seven was forced to a fifth game.

Noah Browne '16 continued his recent hot streak atop the card, sweeping Caleb Garza '13 with a pair of 11-6 triumphs and an 11-9 win in the third. The No. 2 match provided the night's greatest drama, as Amherst's Charles Loesch-Quintin '13 took a thrilling opener from Brian Mullen '15, 12-10, before suffering 11-7 and 11-5 setbacks. The Jeff co-captain rallied, however, dominating the final two games, 11-4 and 11-2, to notch a hard-fought 3-2 win.

In the No. 3 slot, Dave Kerr '14 battled Conn. College's Ben Thaler '14, rebounding from a second-game loss to win, 3-1, thanks to a marathon 15-13 win in the fourth game. Scott DeSantis '15 swept past John Sluder '14 in the fourth position with triumphs of 11-7, 11-8 and 11-9 while Alex Southmayd '15 needed extra points in the third and fourth to manage a hard-fought 3-1 (11-7, 8-11, 14-12, 12-10) win over Hunter Bolling '14.

The Jeffs' final two victories came in the form of sweeps by Max Kardon '15 and Stephen Cacouris '16 in the sixth and seventh slots, respectively. The Camels picked up their lone wins from Mike Coscarelli '15 and Justin Curtis '14 as Amherst's Jake Albert '15 and Kelvin Chen '16 fell in the bottom two lineup spots.
