HANOVER, NH - The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams dropped a dual match twinbill at Dartmouth College on Wednesday, falling 8-1 and 7-2, respectively, in a matchup of four nationally ranked teams.
After posting a trio of victories in a grueling five-match weekend at the Williams Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, the Amherst women, ranked 12th in the latest Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association poll, attempted to ascend the ladder against the seventh ranked Big Green. Eighth and ninth seeds Emily Stark (first-year/Roanoke, VA) and Mary Francis Ford (junior/Altamont, NY) bolstered the Jeffs with a pair of wins over Lys Verlenden (9-10, 9-4, 8-10, 9-2, 9-2) and Damon Grant (9-1, 9-1, 9-0), but Dartmouth swept the rest of the matches among the top seven seeds, including a 9-0, 9-1, 9-5 win by second-seed Charlotte Haldeman, ranked 22nd nationally, over Amherst's Roopali Agarwal (Boxford, MA), ranked 32nd.
Elsewhere in the draw, Dartmouth top-seed Lindsey Bishop downed 28th ranked senior K.C. Giese (Ardmore, PA) 9-6, 5-9, 9-1, 9-1, Farrar Evans beat Amherst senior Vanessa Champion (Philadelphia, PA) 9-2, 9-3, 9-0, Crosby Haynes blanked Jeffs' fourth-seeded sophomore Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) 9-1, 9-5, 9-3, Sara Connoly posted a 9-1, 9-3, 9-0 shutout win over Amherst first-year Tara Kenney (West Chatham, MA), Beth Vadasdi downed Jeffs' sixth-seed Katie Alburger (Gladwyne, PA) 9-2, 9-2, 9-0, and Dartmouth seventh-seed Kaitlin Yaremchuk beat junior Lindsay Snyder (Narberth, PA) 9-3, 9-1, 9-5.
Head Coach Jackie Bagwell and the Jeffs, now 5-4 on the season, host the Amherst Invitational this Saturday and Sunday with times and matchups to be announced.
Meanwhile, the 16th ranked Amherst men, inactive since a 7-2 win over Tufts on Dec. 7, won the first match of the day - a 15-12, 17-14, 7-15, 15-10 thriller by top-seeded senior Captain Addison West (Haverford, PA) over Andre Prokipiw - but fell victim to a Dartmouth sweep in the rest of the draw. Included in the sweep, James Judah edged sophomore Carlo Valdesolo (Andover, MA) 11-15, 17-15, 15-6, 13-15, 15-14, Bill Reisner downed sophomore David Bauer (Darien, CT) 15-8, 15-11, 15-10, Scott Judah topped sophomore John Holodnak (Wellesley, MA) 15-11, 15-6, 15-8, Jesse Nisselson beat first-year Asad Haque (Richmond Hill, Ontario) 15-7, 15-5, 15-3, Chris O'Connell blanked senior Leif-Erik Bohman (New Haven, CT) 15-12, 15-1, 15-9, Brad Doline downed senior Joseph Ebersole (Washington, DC) 15-4, 15-9, 15-6, and Ross Johnson outlasted sophomore Roger Boulay (Norfolk, MA) 15-4, 15-8, 13-15, 15-13.
The Amherst fell to 2-1 with the loss. They take on the University of Rochester at the University of Pennsylvania this Saturday at 10 a.m.
