Matthew Travis was hired in the summer of 2016 and will begin his second stint as an assistant coach on the Amherst College men's soccer staff.
Travis first joined head coach Justin Serpone's staff this fall following the completion of his master's degree in Leadership Management at Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C. where he also served as a two-year graduate assistant men's soccer coach.
Travis gained extensive experience in his coaching role at Montreat, including on the field coaching, recruiting, mentoring student athletes, office work, and video editing. In addition, he earned the NSCAA Advanced Diploma in 2014, after previously acquiring the NSCAA National Diploma the previous year. Travis also served as a state staff coach for the Olympic Development Program in North Carolina.
Since 2010, Travis has worked several soccer camps including Virginia Wesleyan (2013), Emory (2010-2016), and at the Naval Academy (2015-2016).
In addition, the Chesapeake, Va. native was named the head coach of the Beach FC Club (Virginia Beach) U11 travel team (2012-2014), was a volunteer assistant for boys varsity soccer at Hickory High School in Chesapeake, (2012) and Cox High School in Virginia Beach (2013), before elevating to the varsity assistant and head JV coach at Cox the following year.
A 2014 graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Travis played for the school's club soccer team. During his interscholastic career, Travis a four-year Virginia ODP State Team player, a four-year starter at Great Bridge High School, garnering All-District Team honors as a junior and a senior, and played for Beach FC (Premier Team U10-U18) where he captained the team from U10-U17.
