AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's soccer team kicked off the 2019-2020 athletic season in style, netting two second half scores to post a 2-0 shut out win over Nichols College Wednesday evening under the lights at Gooding Field.
With the victory, Amherst starts 2019 1-0-0 on the season, while Nichols falls to 1-2-0 overall. Amherst returns to the field this Saturday, September 7 when they open their conference slate with a 2:30 PM NESCAC bout against Bowdoin at home.
Breaking through in the 65th minute, sophomore German Giammattei tallied the first Mammoths goal of the year. Sending a through ball to the top left of the box, Ada Okorogheye '23 connected with Giammattei before the forward cut back on his defender and ripped a low shot into the bottom right corner.
Finding the back of the net 18 minutes later, Dane Lind '20 potted an insurance marker for Amherst off a dish from Ignacio Cubedeu '23. Executing on a set free kick play from 30 yards out, Cubedeu sent a short pass behind the Bisons' wall to Lind at the top corner of the box before the senior beat the Nichols keeper low, near side.
Dictating the pace of play and controlling possession for the majority of the contest, the Mammoths gave up just two shots on goal with both Bisons' attempts on target being taken from over 25 yards out.
In between the pipes, Bernie White '22 (1-0-0) made two stops for Amherst in the winning effort, while Juan Carlos De La Cruz (1-2-0) finished the night with eight saves for the Bisons in the loss.
The Mammoths held a dominant edge in both shots (26-6) and corner kicks (5-1) and were whistled for nine fouls, while the visitors were called for 10 infractions.
