NESCAC Preview: Men's Soccer Ready to Host NESCAC Semifinal Action


AMHERST, Mass. – The fourth-seeded Amherst College men's soccer team is set to host NESCAC Championship Semifinal action Saturday, Nov. 3 when it takes on eighth-seeded Colby College at Hitchcock Field at 11 a.m.

The winner of Amherst's semifinal contest with Colby will advance to the 2018 NESCAC Championship title game on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 12 p.m. at Hitchcock Field. The second semifinal matchup pits sixth-seeded Williams against seventh-seeded Hamilton beginning at 1:30 p.m.

  • The lone top-four seed to advance past the first round, No. 4 Amherst secured home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs with a 1-0 shutout victory against No. 5 Bowdoin.
  • Upsetting undefeated and top-seeded Tufts, No. 8 Colby battled past the Jumbos in penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 double overtime draw.
  • Sixth-seeded Williams avenged a regular season ending loss to the Panthers with a 1-0 win over No. 3 Middlebury to earn a spot in the semifinals.  
  • Handing No. 2 Connecticut College its second loss of the season, seventh-seeded Hamilton punched its ticket to the conference semis with a 1-0 victory over the Camels.  

No. 4 Seed (12-3-1, 6-3-1 NESCAC) – Schedule/Roster/Stats

  • With six goals apiece, German Giammattei '22 and Sebastian Derby '21 lead the Mammoths and are tied for third in the conference in the category, while Giammattei has added two assists to boast a team-high 14 points (tied fourth in the NESCAC).
  • Luke Nguyen '19 (5G, 3A), Dane Lind '20 (1G, 10A) and Fikayo Ajayi '19 (3G, 5A) boost a dynamic Amherst attack, with the trio each eclipsing the double-digit point mark and Lind leading the league in assists with 10.
  • Starting 12 contests for the Mammoths, Bernie White '22 (10-1-1) ranks second in the NESCAC in goals against (7). In 1100:40 minutes, White has amassed 60 saves en route to owning a 0.57 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.

No. 8 Seed (7-6-3, 3-5-2 NESCAC) – Schedule/Roster/Stats

  • Netting four goals on the season, Cam Clouse leads the Mules' offense with eight points, while David Howarth and Lucas Pereira have logged two scores and two assists each as a potent one-two punch.
  • Ethan Fabricant (2G) and Asa Berolzheimer (1G, 1A) have drawn the attention of defenses as the final Colby players with three-or-more points, while four other Mules have posted a goal each.
  • With 15 starts for 1372:33 minutes in net, Dan Carlson (5-6-2) has recorded 70 saves this fall to own four shut outs, a 0.85 goals against average and a .843 save percentage.

No. 6 Seed (9-5-2, 4-4-2 NESCAC) – Schedule/Roster/Stats

  • Leading the Ephs in all three major offensive statistical categories, Chris Fleischer has potted four scores and dished out three assists for 11 points to spark the Williams offense.
  • With four goals and an assist, Gregory Andreou in next on the Ephs with nine points, while Bobby Fabricant has registered eight points behind three goals and two helpers.
  • Starting all but one game for Williams in between the pipes, Aaron Schein (6-5-1) has recorded 41 stops and six shut outs to boast a 0.76 goals against average and a .774 save percentage in 1413:22 minutes.

No. 7 Seed (9-6-1, 4-5-1 NESCAC) – Schedule/Roster/Stats

  • Roth Wetzel and Bobby Chapman headline the Continentals offense with three goals each, while Wetzel has added an assist to post a team-high seven points on the year.
  • Setting up Hamilton's transitional game, Jeff Plump and Aidan Wood have dished out three helpers apiece to lead Hamilton, while Matt Casadei and Sam Dils have each netted two scores to round out the Continentals attack.
  • Second in the league in save percentage (.921) and tied for fourth in the conference in goals against average (0.57), Thomas Benson (6-5-1) has made 82 saves to rack up five shut outs in 1103:22 minutes in frame.
