AMHERST, Mass. – Junior defender Rod Castro of the Amherst College men's lacrosse team has been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Division III Warrior and New Balance Team of the Week for his shut down play in the defensive end for the Mammoths.
Headlining the defensive unit in a 1-1 week for Amherst, Castro started off the week with a big four ground ball, eight caused turnovers performance in a dominant 23-8 victory over Connecticut College before picking up three ground balls and forcing two turnovers in a tough 15-14 loss to then-No. 6 Tufts to close out the two-game span with seven total ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
In 11 games this spring, the Bryn Mawr, Pa. native has caused 27 turnovers to lead the Mammoths and rank second in the category in the NESCAC, while his 27 ground balls on the year rank sixth on Amherst.
This is the fifth consecutive week Amherst has landed a student-athlete on the USILA Team of the Week and Castro is the fourth different Mammoth to earn the honor.
Castro and No. 6 Amherst return to action this Saturday, April 20 when they travel to No. 12 Bates for a 1 p.m. conference clash.
