AMHERST, Mass. – After a noteworthy 2-0 weekend at the Mustang Classic that featured back-to-back wins over top-15 teams, senior attackman Evan Wolf, junior goalkeeper Chad Simons and first-year face off specialist Juan Gonzalez of the Amherst College men's lacrosse team have each been named to the 10-player United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's (USILA) Division III Warrior and New Balance Team of the Week.
Traveling to Stevenson University for the annual Mustang Classic, the Mammoths posted a 17-9 victory over then-No. 14 Franklin and Marshall before handing then-No. 2 RIT its first loss in 30 regular season games with a 17-16 comeback win.
The reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, Wolf was nothing short of sensational on offense for the Mammoths, recording 12 points and a 57.9 shooting percentage behind a seven goal effort against the Diplomats and a four goal, one assist performance versus RIT. The Wynnewood, Pa. native currently ranks 13th in the nation in points per game (5.83) with 24 goals and 11 assists on the year.
A native of Warren, N.J., Simons racked up 37 stops in the two game span – registering 22 saves versus F&M and 15 stops against the Tigers – to average a 12.50 GAA on the weekend. With a 58.5 save percentage and a 10.46 goals against average so far this spring, Simons ranks inside the top-two in the NESCAC in both categories.
Hitting his stride at the face off dot, Gonzalez has impressed in his rookie campaign for Amherst and was instrumental in the Mammoths' winning weekend. At the X, Gonzalez finished 38-for-58 with 23 ground balls, including a stellar 23-for-35 effort against RIT with 16 ground ball pickups and a key face off win after what stood as Amherst's game-winning goal.
Amherst returns to the field this Saturday, March 23 when they travel to Hamilton for a 1 p.m. conference clash.
