AMHERST, Mass. – Evan Wolf '19 and Matt Solberg '20 netted four goals apiece to headline the Mammoths offense as the No. 5 Amherst College men's lacrosse team used dominant second and third quarters to run away from Bowdoin College, 22-9 Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 3-0 on the season and to 2-0 in league play, while Bowdoin falls to 2-1 overall (1-1 NESCAC). Amherst returns to the field on Friday, March 15 when they battle No. 15 Franklin and Marshall at the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
Opening the contest with back-to-back goals, the Polar Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with both Jake Crossman and Zach Chandler finding nylon in the opening five minutes.
Responding in a big way, the Mammoths countered with five unanswered scores as Wolf (2), Jon Coffey '20, Solberg and Jimmy McAfee '20 each beat the Bowdoin netminder to set the score at 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior Brogan Mahon extended the home team's lead to 6-2 30 seconds into the second stanza before Zach Chandler teamed up with Nick Conway to finally tack another Bowdoin score to the board at the 10:48 mark after being shut out for 15 minutes.
Going on a 6-0 run to push to the score to 12-3, Trenton Shore '19 (3), Wolf, Coffey and Solberg each tallied markers for the Mammoths over the next nine minutes before Bowdoin made a push to regain momentum behind goals from Chris Fowler and Sam Carlin in the final 11 seconds before intermission to make it 12-5 at the break.
Lengthening their lead to 16-5, Amherst opened the second half with a 4-0 run behind goals from McAfee, Mahon, Coffey and Wolf, before Will Murtagh converted on a dish from Conway at the 6:39 mark to notch the Polar Bear's lone score of the third period.
Closing out the stanza with another 4-0 run, Jack Norton '19 and Dylan Peabody '21 sent shots over the goal line with 5:37 and 3:48 on the clock, respectively, before Solberg registered two man-up scores in a 20 second span to make it 20-6 entering the final 15 minutes of action.
Bowdoin outscored the Mammoths 3-2 in the fourth, with Sam Langan (2) and Murtagh potting scores for the Polar Bears and Jack Hutchinson '21 and Jack Patton '21 netting goals for Amherst to cap off the dominant 22-9 victory.

- In between the pipes, Chad Simons '20 (3-0) made eight saves in 41:12 to earn the win for Amherst, while Gib Versfeld '21 and Cam Mitchell '21 made one and two stops, respectively, in relief. Jack O'Connor (2-1) took the loss for Bowdoin, making nine saves in 41:12, while Michael Covell recorded four stops in the final 18:48.
- Finishing 16-for-28 at the face off X for the Mammoths, Juan Gonzalez '22 picked up a game-high 11 ground balls, while Rod Castro '20 led all players with two caused turnovers.
- Sam Carlin finished 15-for-29 on face offs and led Bowdoin in ground ball pickups with 10.
- Amherst held the edge in shots, 47-37, and ground balls, 35-23, and finished an impressive 5-for-9 on man-up opportunities, while Bowdoin went 1-for-1 up a man.
