No. 4 Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 York in NCAA Third Round Action, 13-11

AMHERST, Mass. – The Mammoths were unable to comeback from a two-score deficit at the half in a back-and-forth thriller, as the fourth-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team was edged by second-ranked York College, 13-11 in a NCAA Championship Third Round battle Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

With the loss, Amherst closes out the 2018 season with a 15-4 overall ledger, while York advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals and improves to 19-2 on the year. 

The sides traded scores to start the first period in the evenly matched contest, with Thomas Pfeiffer powering a pass from Hunter Davis into the nylon at the 11:36 mark to get the Spartans on the board before Colin Minicus '20 found Jon Coffey '20 for the goal just over three minutes later to even the tilt at one all.

Jake Hvazda capitalized on a Joey Fiorino dish with 7:39 on the clock, however it took just eight seconds for the Mammoths to counter as Minicus netted Drew Kelleher's '18 pass to deadlock the score once again.

Potting two unanswered markers in the final 3:23 of the opening quarter, Ryan Cook and Dylan Wolf each drove shots past the Amherst netminder to give York a two-goal cushion at he end of one. Jake Hvazda and Brad Casale were credited with the assists on the scoring plays.

Taking their first lead of the game in the second stanza, the Mammoths notched three straight scores to own a 5-4 lead with 8:31 remaining before the break as Minicus and Dylan Peabody '21 each logged unassisted markers and Coffey converted on a pass from Jack Norton '19. 

Responding in kind, the next three goals before halftime belonged to the Spartans, with Davis, Gunnar Reynolds and Matt Whitcher each registering a goal in the final 6:32 before the horn to give York a 7-5 lead with 30 minutes to play.

Sandwiching a goal by Pfeiffer, Coffey and Jackson Herrick '20 tallied scores for Amherst at the 14:36 and 11:08 marks, respectively, to get the home team back within one, however York once again finished out the quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 11-7 lead entering the fourth period. 

The Mammoths outscored York, 4-2 in the fourth, however Amherst was unable to pull off the late comeback as the Spartans held on for the 13-11 victory. 

Herrick opened up scoring in the quarter with an unassisted marker with 12:25 on the clock, before Davis notched his third goal of the game 1:17 later while up a player to push the score to 12-8 in favor of the visitors.

Getting the Mammoths within striking distance entering the final stretch, Coffey teamed up with Minicus for the score and Peabody buried an assist from Jordan Sanford '18 to make it 12-10 with 4:40 remaining.

Whitcher potted what stood as the Spartans final dagger with 35 seconds remaining, but despite a Dylan Finazzo '20 strike after a face off win just six seconds later, Amherst couldn't finish off the comeback as York closed out the 13-11 win.


  • In between the pipes, Chad Simons (9-3) registered five saves in the losing effort for Amherst, while Landry Marshall made 15 stops for York in the win.
  • At the face off X, Finazzo finished 16-for-26 with four ground balls to lead Amherst's 16-for-28 day at the dot, while Reid Shilling '21 posted a contest-high six caused turnovers.
  • The Mammoths owned a 26-18 edge in shots on target and a 32-24 advantage in ground balls.
  • Amherst went a 0-for-2 up a player and a perfect 11-for-11 on clears, while York finished 16-for-21 on clear attempts and 1-for-2 up a player.
