AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team routed visiting Mount Ida College this afternoon 17-5 on Gooding Field in Amherst, Mass. The Lord Jeffs held just a 2-1 lead after the first quarter, before out-scoring the Mustangs 9-1 in the second quarter to blow the game open.
The second quarter was the difference in the game for Amherst, as senior Tim Thornton (Garden City, NY) scored a trio of goals early in the frame. Rookie Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) and Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) each chipped in with a score as Amherst started the second quarter with a 5-0 scoring run.
After Mt. Ida's Matthew Savage scored on an assist from Dan Harrington with 4:56 to play in the quarter, Amherst closed the frame with another 4-0 run. The scoring out-burst sent the Lord Jeffs into the halftime break with a commanding 10-3 lead.
In the third quarter, the two non-conference foes alternated goals for the first four scores, before Amherst junior midfielder J.T. Milone (Manhasset, NY) and McDonnell scored with :43 and :33 seconds remaining in the period, respectively.
While Amherst's Thornton led all players with four goals, with one assist, the star for the Jeffs' offense on the day was senior Brett Miller (Watagh, NY). The attackman, was Amherst's quarterback from behind the Mt. Ida cage, dishing out an amazing seven assists, while adding a pair of goals for nine total points.
Amherst also got a two-goal, one-assist day from first-year midfielder Evan Redwood (Lutherville, MD). The Mustangs were led offensively by Brett Conley and Leo Shidler, who combined to finish with four goals and an assist.
Amherst senior goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) made 10 saves in net, while Matt Vernik turned away 15 Lord Jeff shots in goal for Mt. Ida. Amherst will return to action next Tuesday for a NESCAC game against Conn College at SUNY-Famingdale on Long Island, NY.
