Mammoths Play Colby to 1-1 Overtime Draw

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Joey Lupo's fifth goal of the season stood as the Mammoths lone score of the night as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team and Colby College battled to a 1-1 overtime draw Friday evening at Orr Rink.

With the tie, Amherst moves to 6-9-4 on the season and to 4-6-3 in conference action, while Colby moves to 7-9-3 overall (3-8-2 NESCAC).

Opening scoring at the 10:03 mark, the Mammoths tallied the lone goal of the first period after three quick penalties gave the home team a 4-v-3 power play. Working the puck around the zone, Sean Wrenn '22 dished a pass across the zone to Lupo on the right dot who one-timed a shot past the outstretched keeper.

Responding 1:46 into the second stanza, Paddy Daly netted his first collegiate shorthanded score for the Mules to deadlock the sides at 1-1. Sending the puck the length of the ice and catching the Mammoths' on a change, Alex Bourhas won the race to behind the Amherst net and put a wrap-around shot on frame that was redirected over the goal line by Daly.

A scoreless third period saw both sides earn solid chances to avoid the overtime period, but Giancarlo Ventre '20 and Andrew Tucci stayed strong in their respective nets, with Tucci smothering a snap shot from the high slot from Michael Pitts '23 and Ventre turning away a breakaway opportunity from Kienan Scott and an attempt on a 2-v-1 from Logan Clarke with two highlight reel right pad saves.

Extra time saw the Mammoths outshoot the visitors, 4-0, as they looked to pot the decisive score, but the Colby keeper came away with four stops, including back-to-back saves with six seconds remaining to ensure the 1-1 tie.

In between the pipes, Ventre (3-7-2) registered 25 saves for Amherst in the draw, while Tucci (3-7-3) racked up 35 stops for the Mules.

The Mammoths owned a 36-26 edge in shots on frame in the matchup and went 1-for-7 up a skater, while Colby finished 0-for-4 on the power play.

Amherst continues its four-game homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host Bowdoin College beginning at 3:00PM.
