Men's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Overtime Tie Against Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After hitting nylon on their first shot of the day less than 15 seconds into play, the Mammoths were unable to sneak another past the Cardinals keeper as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team battled Little III rival Wesleyan University to a 1-1 overtime draw Saturday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

With the tie, Amherst moves to 6-9-3 on the season and to 4-6-2 in league play, while Wesleyan moves to 9-8-1 overall (5-6-1 NESCAC). Amherst next hits the ice on Friday, Feb. 7 when the Mammoths kick off a four-game homestand with a 7:00PM conference matchup against Colby College.

Jumping out to a 1-0 lead 14 seconds after the opening faceoff, senior Joey Lupo potted his fifth of the winter with assists from Noah Gilreath '20 and Sean Wrenn '22. Keeping the puck inside the offensive zone on the right point, Gilreath sent a low shot towards frame that was redirected by Lupo in the high slot past the Cardinals keeper.

Responding with 5:33 on the clock, Tyler Wyatt deadlocked the sides at one all. Corralling a saucer pass from Spencer Fox behind the Mammoths' defense to earn a breakaway, Wyatt deked to his forehand and slid a shot inside the right post to make it 1-1 entering the first intermission.

After 40 minutes of scoreless action following the two-goal first, the Cardinals looked to seal the win in OT with two grade-A scoring chances, but Giancarlo Ventre '20 had other plans as he turned away both of Wesleyan's one-on-one opportunities to solidify the 1-1 draw.

In between the pipes, Ventre (3-7-1) registered 28 saves for the Mammoths in the tie, while Tim Sestak (9-7-1) racked up 46 stops.

Amherst owned a 47-29 edge in shots on frame behind the strength of a 19 shot third period and went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Cardinals finished 0-for-4 up a skater.
