Men's Ice Hockey Battles Little III Rival Wesleyan to 0-0 Overtime Draw

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Taking to the ice against the Cardinals, the Amherst College men's ice hockey team skated to a 0-0 overtime draw against Little III rival Wesleyan on Saturday evening at Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

With the tie, Amherst moves to 7-6-3 on the season and to 4-3-4 in league action, while Wesleyan moves to 9-4-4 overall (5-3-3 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 27 when they wrap up their nine game road trip with a 4 p.m. conference tilt at Trinity College.

One of the Mammoths best scoring chances of the battle came 17 seconds into the contest as a Cardinal major boarding penalty afforded Amherst a five-minute power play. Noah Gilreath '20 made a bid to get the visitors on the board but his shot went just wide following a faceoff win, while Patrick Daly's '20 ensuing drive on target was gloved down by the Wesleyan keeper.

The Cardinals generated a pair of top-notch chances at the end of the stnaza as Walker Harris found Luke Babcock in the high slot and Jordan Rose earned a clean shot after racing down the left wing, however both opportunities sailed just wide of the right post.

Phil Johansson '19 and John Festa '19 led the Mammoths with three shots on frame apiece, while Joey Lupo '20 paced Amherst on faceoffs with a 7-for-11 showing at the dot.

  • In between the pipes, Connor Girard '18 (4-3-4) registered 23 saves in the draw for Amherst, while Tim Sestak (5-2-4) made 18 stops for the Cardinals.
  • Wesleyan owned a 23-18 edge in shot differential despite outshooting Wesleyan 11-7 in the second period.
  • Neither side was able to convert on the power play with both teams finishing 0-for-3.
