Three Unanswered Goals Propel Mammoths Past Babson, 3-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Thomas Lindstrom '18 dished out helpers on all three Mammoth scores as a dominant second period powered the Amherst College men's ice hockey team past Babson, 3-1 Tuesday evening at the Babson Skating Center.

With the win, Amherst's overall ledger improves to 7-6-3, while Babson falls to 10-7-2 on the year. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 when they travel to Little III rival Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. matchup.

The Beavers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just 1:33 into the contest. Up to the initial task, the Amherst keeper turned away Patrick Flynn's slap shot from the left point, however Bobby Hall was there to jam in the rebound and put the home team on top.

Responding 6:45 into the second period, Joey Lupo '20 netted his fourth score of the season for the Mammoths following a Babson elbowing penalty to deadlock the game at 1-1. Surveying the ice behind the net, Thomas Lindstrom '18 dished a saucer pass to Lupo in the slot who one-timed the puck into the bottom right corner.

Notching his sixth goal of the winter and third game-winner, Patrick Daly '20 recorded the go-ahead goal with 6:02 on the clock. John Festa '19 and Lindstrom were credited with the assists on the play.

Festa tallied a final insurance goal for Amherst with 1:50 remaining in regulation, sending the puck into an empty net to clinch the 3-1 victory.

  • In between the pipes, Giancarlo Ventre '20 (2-2-0) racked up 26 saves for the Mammoths in the winning effort, while Matt Pompa (7-7-2) made 22 stops for the Beavers in the loss.
  • Babson owned a slight 27-25 edge in shot differential despite Amherst doubling up the Beavers, 12-6 in the second period.
  • The Mammoths finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while Babson went 0-for-1 up a skater.
