BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Two early scores by the Red Dragons in the opening period proved too much to overcome for the Mammoths as the Amherst College men's ice hockey team fell to SUNY Cortland, 4-1 in its final game at the Binghamton Devils Tournament Sunday afternoon.
With the setback, Amherst falls to 2-1-1 on the season, while SUNY Cortland improves to 3-6-0 overall. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 2 when they host Little III rival Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. conference battle.
Striking twice in the opening 6:45 of action, the Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Finding the back of the net on a dish from Andrew McCann, Michael Faliero made it 1-0 at the 3:33 mark, before Ryan Fritz doubled the SUNY Cortland advantage just over three minutes later. McCann and Scott Docherty were credited with the assists on Fritz's scoring play.
The Mammoths broke through 5:28 into the third period following a scoreless second stanza, with Phil Johansson '19 posting his second goal of the winter. Corralling a pass from Mark Esposito '20, Johansson beat the SUNY Cortland netmidner to bring Amherst within one.
Scott Donahue responded with two goals of his own to direct the Red Dragons to the 4-1 win, finding nylon at the 10:23 mark on a dish from Fritz before burying the final dagger on an empty net score with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
- Connor Girard '18 (0-1-1) registered 19 saves in goal in the losing effort for Amherst, while Drew Weigman (3-6-0) made 23 stops for SUNY Cortland in the winning effort.
- Amherst owned a slight 24-23 edge in shots on target in the contest.
- Neither team was able to convert on the power play, with the Mammoths finishing 0-for-4 and the Red Dragons going 0-for-6.
