MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Dan Merenich '15 scored a pair of goals just 3:14 apart midway through the first period to propel the Amherst College men's hockey team to a 5-0 shutout of Wesleyan University in NESCAC and Little III action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Amherst improves to 2-1-0 on the season, 2-1-0 in league action. Wesleyan moves to 1-3-0 overall, 1-3-0 in NESCAC play.
Shortly after going on the power play in the first frame, Merenich scored the first of his two goals at the 11:13 mark. Thomas Lindstrom '18 and Aaron Deutsch '15 assisted on the score. Just 3:14 later, Merenich struck again on the power play, this time on assists from Deutsch and Brendan Burke '16 to set the score at 2-0.
Just under five minutes into the third stanza, Deutsch added a goal of his own on a pass from Rowbortham to increase the lead to 4-0. At the 12:10 mark, Conor Brown '16 put the finishing touches on the game with assists from Flanagan and Deutsch.
Wesleyan, which outshot the Jeffs, 38-37 received 33 saves from Nolan Daley (0-1-0) who made his first start of the season. Purple & White goalie Dave Cunningham '16 was superb between the pipes, registering 37 saves on all 37 shots he faced on target to earn the shutout victory and move to 2-1-0 on the season.
Amherst is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 25 when it travels to St. Michael's for a non-conference game set to begin at 4 p.m.
