AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's ice hockey team scored two goals in the third period and held off a late attack as they edged non-conference opponent Elmira College in its 2014 home-opener Saturday afternoon, 5-4.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 4-1-0 overall, while the Soaring Eagles drop to 2-3-1 on the year.
Amherst got on the board first in the opening minutes of the game as they took advantage of a power play opportunity. Jake Turrin '15 sent a shot towards goal but was blocked by an Elmira defender. The puck redirected to Keenan Hodgson '18 who sent another shot towards net but his attempt was saved by goalie Sal Magliocco '17. The rebound, however, went to Topher Flanagan '16 who punched it in to give the home team an early 1-0 lead just 1:33 into play.
The Soaring Eagles evened the score less than five minutes later. Despite being a man down, Carter Shinkaruk '16 got ahead of the Amherst defenders and fired a shot at goalie Dave Cunningham '16. Cunningham blocked the first attempt but the rebound went right back to Shinkaruk as he lifted the puck to the top of the net for the shorthanded score at the 6:23 mark.
The home team regained the lead later in the period as they capitalized on another power play opportunity. With a man advantage, Daniel Merenich '15 sent one past Magliocco for the Jeffs second goal of the period. He was assisted by Chris Roll '17 and Brendan Burke '16.
After 10:21 of scoreless second period action, the visitor's knotted the game at 2-2 when Brian Depp skated down the right side of the rink and sent the puck past the outstretched legs of Cunningham into the back right of the net.
Amherst tacked on its third score of the game just under three minutes later. Skating in front of the goal, David White '18 sent a slapshot over the right shoulder of Magliocco to put the Jeffs back up by one, 3-2. Conor Brown '16 and Aaron Deutsch '15 assisted on the score.
The lead was shortlived, however, when Alexander Taulien found the back of the net with under three minutes to play in the second stanza. With the score, the Soaring Eagles tied the game for a third time as Jarryd ten Vaanholt assisted on the goal.
Just over five minutes into the third period, Amherst took another one-goal lead when Brown stole the puck from an Elmira player near the Jeffs' blue line and skated down the ice, past a defender, and fired a shot into the top left corner of the goal.
Amherst added an insurance tally 3:09 later as Flanagan snuck the puck through the legs of Magliocco to lift the Jeffs ahead by two, 5-3. Brown and White assisted on the score.
With 1:12 left to play in regulation, the Soaring Eagles cut the deficit to one with their fourth goal of the game as Shinkaruk tacked on his second. He was assisted by Ten vaanholt and Eric David.
Elmira pulled the goalie in the closing seconds of the game to give the visitor's a man advantage, but were unable to even the score despite some heavy offensive pressure, as the Jeffs held on for the win. Amherst outshot the Soaring Eagles 34-to-18, as Cunningham made 14 saves in net and Magliocco stopped 29 shots.
The Jeffs return to the rink tomorrow, Nov. 30 for a 3 p.m. non-conference matchup against Nazareth.
