AMHERST, Mass. – Topher Flanagan '16 scored what stood as the game-winner 12:42 into the first period, and Amherst goalie Dave Cunningham '16 turned aside all 27 shots he faced as the Jeffs posted a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over Nazareth College on Sunday afternoon at Orr Rink.
With the win, Amherst improves to 5-1-0 on the season, while Nazareth moves to 4-4-1 overall.
In the opening minutes of play, the visitors had a chance to net the first goal when Dominik Gabaj rang the post with a shot. After Amherst was able to kill off an early Nazareth power play, the Purple & White found its scoring stride when Conor Brown '16 won a faceoff in the Jeffs' defensive zone. David White '18 then connected a pass to Aaron Deutsch '15 who found Flanagan cutting into the Golden Flyers' defensive zone and he finished with a goal to the right corner for his fourth tally of the season to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. The goal was his second game-clincher in as many days as he netted the winner against Elmira College on Saturday.
Following the goal, the Jeffs went on the power play twice in the first stanza, but could not add to its lead as Brandon Lane made 11 saves to keep the score at 1-0.
In the second frame, both teams had a pair of extra-man opportunities but neither team could convert as Lane made 13 saves, while Cunningham made nine stops in an excellent display of goaltending.
Early in the third period, Nazareth had a one-on-one opportunity with Scott Andler in control of the puck but stellar defending by Amherst's Kevin Ryder '16 forced his shot off target.
Cunningham made nine saves in each period en route to his second shutout of the season. Lane collected 32 saves, including 13 in the second stanza but suffered the loss for the Golden Flyers.
Oliver Janzen finished with five shots for Nazaret, while Ben Blasko, Rocky Gruttadau and Matt Manzella chipped in three shots.
Amherst returns to action on Friday, December 5 at NESCAC foe Middlebury College at 7 p.m.
