MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- After a 17th place opening round card, Amherst men's golf shot a 298 on the second day to move up six spots and finish 11th in the Duke Nelson Invitational at Ralph Myhre Golf Course Sunday afternoon.
The Mammoths bested their first day score by 18 strokes to finish with a combined 614 on the weekend. Amherst sat in front of St. Lawrence University by three strokes while ending five strokes behind ninth place finishers Manhattenville and Western New England.
Will Lonnquist '20 cut seven strokes off his opening 18 card on day one to finish with the best score for the Mammoths and t-30th overall in the tournament.
Nicholas Sullivan '20 moved up eight strokes on day two, sitting three shots behind Lonnquist with a total 154 on the weekend.
Cameron Clark '20 and Nicholas Kumamoto '20 rounded out the scoring for the Purple & White with scores of 155 and 157, respectively while Brian Aslanian '22 was the final Amherst competitor who shot a combined 158.
New York University went on to win the tournament by 10 strokes over second place finisher Williams College.
Amherst men's golf will look ahead to next weekend when they travel to Taconic Golf Course for the Williams College Fall Invitational before finalizing their September with the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Qualifier.
