CRANSTON, R.I. – The Amherst men's golf team opened their spring slate with the Wildcat Spring Invitational Saturday afternoon where Cole Vissicchio '20 led the way with a 71 card as the Mammoths secured the top spot on day one at the Cranston Country Club.
With Vissicchio's impressing opening day, he currently sits in first overall and was the only golfer on the day to strike even par. The Mammoths sit in first place with a combined score of 297 (+13).
Jack Burlison '19 and Nicholas Kumamoto '20 notched the second best score on the day for the Mammoths with scorecards of 75, landing them tied for eighth overall. Will Lonquist '20 also clinched a top-15 spot overall with his 76 through the first 18 holes while Erik Zetterstrom '22 rounds out the Purple & White performance on the day shooting nine over par (80) heading into day two.
The Mammoths lead the 20 team field by four strokes as the hosts, Johnson & Wales, and Providence College sit tied for second shooting +17 (301) in their first round. Husson University and Springfield College rounded out the top-five with 307 and 310 marks, respectively.
Aside from Amherst, the Wildcats also landed three golfers inside the top-ten while Providence College secured two through the likes of Alex Jenkins (T2) and Matt Carlson (T8).
