AMHERST, Mass. – After a fall slate that included two top-three finishes, the Amherst men's golf team will gear up for the spring portion of their schedule as they travel to the Wildcat Spring Invitational at Johnson & Wales University on Saturday, April 13th.
The Mammoths are led by head coach Jack Arena '83 who is in his 25th year at the helm of the men's golf team, he is assisted by E.J. Mills. Under Arena's reign, he has led the Purple & White to consecutive conference championships in his first two years and received 2010 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Coach of the Year among multiple NCAA appearances.
"We were disappointed not to qualify for the NESCAC Championship this spring, but are excited for the tournaments we have and especially the challenge of defending our Little Three Title" said coach Arena.
Amherst opened their fall slate with the Trinity Invitational, moving up a spot from their day one placement to finish third overall in their opening competition. On their second weekend, the Mammoths took 6th out of the 22 team field in the Duke Nelson Invitational before tying for 13th in the Williams College Invitational. The Purple & White finished on a strong foot when they placed second out of 17 teams in the Elms Invitational on October 7th.
The Mammoths have three competitions on the plate for the spring, beginning with the Wildcat Spring Invitational this weekend before traveling to Williams College for the Williams Spring opener on April 20th-21st. The final mark on the 2019 schedule is at home as Amherst hosts the Little Three Championships on April 24th.
Meet the Team
With one senior and a junior-heavy roster, the Mammoths enter spring with a veteran corps leading the way. Jack Burlison '19, a 2018 Second Team All-NESCAC selection, contributed 159 and 154 cards in the Elms Invitational and Bill Detrick Invitational while also contributing a 157 mark at the NESCAC Qualifier in the fall.
Cameron Clark '20, Jeffrey Herr '20, Jack Klein '20, Nicholas Kumamoto '20, Will Lonnquist '20, Nick Sullivan '20, and Cole Vissicchio '20 are the seven juniors that make up the majority of the roster. Kumamoto led the Mammoths in the Elms Invitational with a two-day score of 148 while Lonnquist finished sixth overall in the 63 golfer field at the Bill Detrick Invitational. Clark, who received first team all-conference last season, posted a top-performance at the NESCAC Qualifier with a score of 74 on day one and 75 on day two to card a 149 on the weekend while Sullivan notched a 156 combined score at Elms.
