Aaron Toomey ’14 returns to the Amherst sidelines in 2017-18 for a fourth consecutive season. The Greensboro, N.C. native played under head coach David Hixon ’75 from 2010-2014, and finished his career as arguably the greatest player to ever don the Purple & White jersey. The all-time program leader in scoring, Toomey became the only Amherst player to ever score 2,000 points. He finished with 2,033, and his 291 three-pointers and 606 made free throws also ranked first all-time.
As a player, Toomey helped guide Amherst to a national championship in 2012-13 en route to NABC National Player of the Year honors. The following year, the Purple & White returned to the Final Four as Toomey garnered D3hoops.com National Player of the Year praise. Toomey was also just the second player in conference history to win back-to-back Player of the Year laurels as he helped guide the Purple & White to three-straight conference titles.
During Toomey’s four-year career, Amherst posted an incredible 108-13 (.893) overall record, and a 36-3 (.923) league ledger that included a national title, a Final Four appearance, an Elite Eight finish and a NCAA third round performance. In addition to his yearly awards, Toomey was also a three-time First Team All-Conference selection, and a three-time NABC and D3hoops.com First Team All-Region honoree.
Following graduation, Toomey signed a professional contract in 2014 to play for Fuenlabrada in Madrid, Spain. An injury derailed his playing days, and he returned to the Pioneer Valley to coach alongside Hixon midway through the 2014-15 campaign.
