HADLEY, Mass. – For his efforts in scoring consecutive game-highs, junior guard Garrett Day '21 of Amherst College men's basketball was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Day's recognition is his first career NESCAC weekly honor, as well as the Mammoths' first on the 2019-20 tab.
Averaging 47.7% from the field on the year, Day led all scorers in both of the Amherst victories last weekend, beginning with 25 points on 53.8% shooting in the Mammoths' 91-80 win over Bowdoin. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native also added four rebounds and three assists.
On Saturday, Amherst picked up a key 87-69 win over Colby where Day led with 16 points and shot 50% from three-point range and from the field. Contributing five rebounds, two assists, and two steals on the game, Day ended the weekend shooting 7-8 from the charity stripe.
Collectively, Day shot 55.6% (10-18) from three-point range through both contests for 41 points, while reeling in nine boards, five dimes, and two thefts.
Just a week prior, he also drained a career-high 29 points in the teams win over Wesleyan (Conn.) and is now leading the team in points per game (13.6).
With just two more regular season matchups, Amherst currently sits third in the NESCAC with a 6-2 league record and will host Trinity (Conn.) in their next outing on Friday, Feb. 14th at 7:00 p.m. before honoring their senior class prior to their game against Connecticut College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
