Men's Basketball Scores Highest Point Total Since 2016 in Win over Lynx

AMHERST, Mass. – Netting their highest point total since 2016, No. 20 Amherst College men's basketball cruised past non-conference opponent Lesley in their first game of the New Year, posting a decisive 116-44 victory on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the second time this season and sixth time in the last four campaigns. Today's 116 point total marked the highest score since 2016 when the Mammoths claimed a 119-69 win over Keystone College on December 31st.

Amherst secures their sixth consecutive win and improves to 9-2 on the season while Lesley still seeks their first triumph on the season, falling to 0-10.

Eric Sellew '20 got things going for the Mammoths, scoring the first five points of the game before Fru Che '21 threw down a monstrous two-handed slam in transition, putting the home side up 9-3.

Scoring 20 of the opening 25 points, the Mammoths jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they entered the halftime break up 38 points (66-28).

Leading all scorers with 15 in the opening 20 minutes, Tommy Mobley '20 finished with 18 points on the night on 6-8 shooting from beyond the arc (75%).

Lesley forwards Chase Howard and Kostas Tatsis led their team in the first half with nine points apiece while Kyle Murphy owned the boards with six.

Amherst continued their impressive shooting into the second half, firing 56.8% (21-37) from the field and 41.7% (5-12) from downtown. The Lynx, who shot 32.3% (10-31) from the field in the first half, finished the game at 26.3%.

Mammoth Michael Schretter '22 aided in those numbers by shooting a perfect 7-7 (100%) from around the rim for 15 points. Dan Schlakman '22 was just shy of a double-double, scoring nine points and nabbing nine rebounds in 17 minutes played. Senior guard Josh Chery '20 added another nine rebounds as the Purple & White totaled out at 56 on the night.

Amherst began to show their athleticism when they were up 95-37 at the eight minute mark in the second half. Jack Harlan '21 threw down back-to-back two-handed tomahawk dunks to inch closer to the 100 point plateau before Isa Maguire '23 corralled an offensive rebound late in the second half and went right back up with it, slamming it through the net with impressive force.

Amherst held the Lynx to five points in the last seven and a half minutes to pull off their ninth win of the season off of 84 bench points and 52 points in the paint.

Howard ended the game with a team-high 14 points and six field goals while Treyvon Trent tallied eight on 3-11 shooting.

Both teams came up short of their turnover per-game average, with the Lynx totaling out at 15 and the Mammoths at nine. Garrett Day '21 dished out a game-high six assists while Trent had two.

The Mammoths hit the road for their next outing, facing off against Wesleyan (Conn.) on Tuesday, January 7th, before returning to LeFrak Gymnasium on Friday for their opening conference matchup against Middlebury (1/10).
