Amherst Opens Season with Rout of Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Eric Sellew '20 recorded a double-double as #4 Amherst College opened the 2019-20 season with an 86-48 victory over Lasell College in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday night at Lasell Gymnasium.

The season opening win is the first for Interim Head Coach Aaron Toomey, who took the reins for the 2019-20 campaign.

Sellew scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half, and led all players with 13 rebounds as Amherst (1-0) outrebounded Lasell (0-4) 50-31.

The Mammoths turned an 8-8 game into an early rout with a 16-0 run past the midpoint of the first half. Garret Day '20 scored five straight points and then went back to back from three-point range with Tim McCarthy '21 before Fru Che '21 closed the run with a layup, the same way he had opened it.

Che scored 15 points for Amherst, while Day led the Amherst reserves with 13 points. Amherst's bench outscored Lasell's 41-5, while the Mammoths also had extensive advantages in points off turnvoers (35-5) and points off turnovers (17-0), helped by a 20-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Stefan Masciarelli led Lasell with 16 points on 7-13 shooting. Kevin Nunez was in double figures with 11 points, while Jonathan Friberg added eight points and eight rebounds.

Amherst led 46-20 at the half, finishing the period on a 9-2 run with another triple by Day ending the half. Sellew had back to back assists on the final baskets of the half, on his way to a team-high five assists in the game. Grant Robinson '21 had four helpers to go with two steals, eight points and six rebounds, while Day dished out three dimes.

A layup from Che increased the advantage for the visitors to 61-34 with just over 12 minutes remaining. The Mammoths finished the second half on a 25-14 run to seal the win.

Kevin Vanderhorst handed out four assists for Lasell, who were 0-12 from behind the three-point line.

The Lasers were 22-59 (37.3%) from the field, while Amherst shot 32-72 (44.4%) and 8-25 (32%) from three. Amherst also had a big edge in free-throws, making 14 of 17 attempts, while Lasell went to the line just five times (4-5).

Lasell will play another NESCAC foe when they travel to Tufts on Thursday.

Amherst plays their home opener on Friday night at 6:00 PM when they host Elmira College, part of the Ken Wright Invitational tournament next Friday and Saturday.
