ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Amherst College earned their first NCAA Tournament win since 2016 with an 84-53 victory over Rosemont College in the First Round on Friday evening at Louis Alexander Palestra.
The Mammoths overpowered the Ravens in the second half, outscoring their opponents 51-28 to turn an eight-point halftime lead into a double-digit rout.
Amehrst (24-4) advances to Saturday's Second Round game, where they will battle the host Rochester Yellowjackets. Tip off for a spot in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen is at 7:00 PM on Saturday evening.
No. 7 Amherst never trailed and built their lead steadily until it eclipsed the 30-point margin for the first time in the final minute of the game.
The Mammoths shot 50% from the floor and held Rosemont to just 27% while also outrebounding the Ravens 54-31. A 44-22 edge in points in the paint and a 28-7 bench scoring advantage was also key to the win. C.J. Bachmann '19 was a big part of that, with 10 points off the bench on an efficient 5-8 shooting.
Che was 3-7 from behind the three-point line, where the Mammoths outshot their opponents 38.5% to 24%. Senior Joe Schneider was effective at both ends of the floor, scoring eight points on 4-5 shooting, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out three assists and recording three blocks and two steals.
The Ravens (15-13) were led by 16 points from Keith Blassingale and ten points from Jacob Simonson.
Amherst led 33-25 at the break, then opened the second half with back to back layups by Robinson and a triple by Che to extend the advantage to 15.
Simonson and Blassingale made three-pointers to keep the Ravens within 11, but Che answered from outside. The lead was still eleven midway through the second half, then Bachmann went to work, scoring eight points in a 13-0 run as the Mammoths stretched the lead to 24, 64-40 with 7:00 to play.
