Day's Touch Helps Mammoths Topple Amcats

PAXTON, Mass. – Garrett Day '21 scored a career high 21 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the three-point line and Amherst College improved to 4-0 with a 98-58 victory over Anna Maria in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Fuller Center.

The Mammoths continued their strong scoring and hot shooting to begin the season. They have now shot above 50% in all four of their wins and are averaging 99.0 points per game.

Day was 8-12 from the floor and scored his 21 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Joe Schneider '19 scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting and Eric Sellew '20 had a game-high ten rebounds as Amherst outrebounded the Amcats (2-4) by a 47-27 margin.

Amherst scored 50 points in the first half and took a 29-point lead into the break. They never trailed after beginning the game on a 17-4 run behind two early layups by Joseph Schneider and five straight points by Fru Che '21, who finished the night with seven points and seven boards.

Day and Dylan Groff '19 went back to back from long-range to up the lead to 23-6, and Day canned another triple and then a jump-shot as the lead grew to more than 20 during a 14-0 run capped by a three-point play out of first year Will Phelan.

Anna Maria got back to within 18 points on a layup by Sidney Limage, who had eight points to co-lead the Amcats along with Bobby Perette. Limage also filled the stat sheet with two blocks, two steals and two assists.

A 12-1 spurt to end the half put the Mammoth's lead back to nearly thirty points, with Grant Robinson hitting from downtown as part of his 11-point night.

Devonn Allen '22 and DJ Diabate '21 scored eight points apiece off the bench, as the Amherst reserves outscored the Amcats bench 58-28. Amherst also had a 44-20 edge in points in the paint.

Amherst is home this Saturday for a 2:00 pm game against Emerson. The Mammoths will host Babson and Lasell next week before finishing their pre-Christmas break schedule on the road against Springfield.
