HADLEY, Mass. – As the final regular seasons for Amherst College basketball players Hannah Hackley and Michael Riopel came to a close, the pair of seniors turned in outstanding performances, leading each to be named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week.
Hackley and the number one ranked women's basketball program completed their second consecutive perfect regular season, while Riopel led the men's team to two wins over Top-Ten competition, allowing Amherst to seize the men's basketball regular season title and number seed in the postseason as well.
Riopel was a pivotal part of a pair of victories over No. 8 Williams and No. 5 Middlebury. He averaged 18.0 points per game over the final two games of the weekend, while also grabbing 7.5 rebounds and dishing out 2.0 assists per game. He shot 54.5 percent from the field in the wins and was perfect from the free throw line (9-for-9) against Middlebury.
Hackley averaged 14.5 points, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, while shooting 70.5 percent from the field in two NESCAC victories last week as the Mammoths defeated the Ephs and the Panthers to improve to 24-0 (10-0 NESCAC). Amherst is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Women's Basketball Championship.
Both teams will host NESCAC quarterfinals games at LeFrak next Saturday afternoon, February 17th. The women will host Trinity at 2:00 pm, followed by the men's quarterfinal against Bowdoin at 4:00 pm.
