Mammoths Make it Back to Back NESCAC Victories

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Grant Robinson and Michael Riopel both had 19 points for Amherst College as the Mammoths held on for an 82-77 win over Colby College in NESCAC men's basketball Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Amherst (11-6, 3-2) , winners of their last two NESCAC games after knocking off Hamilton last Saturday heads to Bowdoin College for a 3 p.m. start.

The Mules (10-8 overall, 1-4 NESCAC) play again Saturday at 3 p.m. against Hamilton College. Bowdoin took a 72-68 win over the Continentals tonight.

By the numbers
* Robinson was 7-for-8 from the foul line and added three assists, while Riopel had five assists and blocked three shots.
* Fru Che '21 came off the bench for 11 points for the Mammoths. Eric Sellew '20 had nine points, Josh Chery '20 finished with eight, and Joseph Schneider '19 had six points five assists, and three blocks.
* Colby first-year Wallace Tucker had his best collegiate game with 23 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 10-for-12 from the foul line. He also tied for a game-high five assists.
* Alex Dorion had 15 of his 18 points in the second half to lead a Colby comeback. Dorion was 6-for-10 from 3-point range. Sean Gilmore was 5-for-5 from the foul line for 13 points and Steven Daley was 5-of-6 from the field for 11 points.
* Despite a fast pace to the game, the two teams combined for just 25 turnovers.
Game highlights
* The Mammoths led 37-31 at halftime after a slow scoring start to the game for both teams. Amherst took its biggest lead of the game at 12 points with 14:46 left in the second half.
* Dorion hit deep shots and Tucker was active to help the Mules turn a 51-39 deficit into a tie game at 59-59 with 8:28 to play.
* The Mammoths pulled away to lead 65-59 with 6:37 to go, but Gilmore scored inside, Dorion hit another 3-point shot, and Ty Williams made a steal and a layup to give Colby a 66-65 lead with 5:34 remaining.
* Che answered with a layup to put Amherst back ahead for good at 67-66 with 4:35 remaining. Robinson hit a big 3-point shot and also went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final 2:32 to help Amherst pull away.
