Mammoths Top WNE to Capture Ken Wright Invitational Title

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College used a 14-1 run in the second half to defeat Western New England 73-61 and capture the Ken Wright Invitational Men's Basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Eric Sellew '20 was named tournament MVP after scoring a game-high 17 points with nine rebounds, while Tommy Mobley '20 was named to the All Tournament Team. Mobley went for 13 points, including 4-5 from behind the three-point line for the Mammoths (2-0).

Sophomore Mike McGuire and junior Mikey Pettway were named to the All Tournament Team for Western New England (1-2). Pettway led all players with 10 assists, and also had twelve points and seven rebounds to his name on Saturday.

The Golden Bears led 51-48 with 11:20 to play after a three-pointer by EJ Day, before Amherst chipped their way back into the game. The deficit was just one point at 51-50 until the 8:28 mark, with Mobley hitting a three-pointer to jump-start the run.

The Mammoths got three straight rebounds en route to a Sellew layup, part of a 52-30 edge on the boards for the home team. Grant Robinson '21 had a double-double with 11 rebounds and 11 points, along with four assists, while Michael Riopel '18 just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine boards, along with two steals.

Riopel knocked down a three-pointer with 4:09 left to play to open up the advantage to ten points, as Amherst began to increase their lead. They reached as big as a 15 point margin, 69-54 with 1:49 left to play.

Western New England shot 56.3% from behind the three-point line in the first half and ended the game firing 13-35 from downtown (37.1%), but just 32.3% from the field.

Amherst struggled from three in first half, shooting 25%, though Mobley went 3-3 from downtown to open up the game.

Zach Tavitian was in double figures with 11 points and had two blocks for the Golden Bears. Day added eight points and Alex Sikorski scored nine points on 3-5 from downtown off the bench.

Sellew was 6-9 from the floor and 5-5 from the free throw line.

Amherst heads to Westfield State on Monday evening for a 7:00 pm game before the Thanksgiving break that will take them into December.

Joining the All Tournament Team from the other two competitors was junior Austin Jones of Sarah Lawrence College and first year Mike Demartinis of MCLA.
